Project description

The aim of the project is to transfer the ground ice storage system implemented in the previous project "ErdEis II" to full operation, to carry out scientific monitoring and benchmarking and to develop a District Energy Management System (DEMS). Various operating modes will be tested, the operating mode will be optimized based on the results, the influence of various parameters will be tracked using models and the cold local heating system with ground ice storage will be used in the best possible way for overall system optimization using DEMS.

In the future energy system, it will no longer be possible to optimize energy efficiency or final and primary energy requirements alone. Instead, flexibility will play an increasingly important role, which, coupled with the availability of renewable electrical energy, will ultimately determine the actual CO2 emissions. Interfaces are now available that enable corresponding optimization by predicting the CO2 intensity of the electricity grid. In the overall concept, this optimization must not only take place on the heating and cooling side, but must also holistically include the requirements and flexibility of the cold local heating network (KNW), household electricity consumption, mobility requirements and own energy generation. In this way, an overall optimum can be achieved and optimizations of subsystems, which are at the expense of overall emissions, can be avoided. Assessment and benchmarking methods must also be further developed accordingly.

Following the predecessor research projects ErdEis (2016-2019, FKZ: 03ET1382) and ErdEis II (2019-2022, FKZ: 03ET1634), in which the theoretical idea of an earth ice storage facility was developed and its first implementation was realized, ErdEis III (FKZ: 03EN3068) will continue to evaluate the measurement data obtained until 2027.
